Common washing machine problems
What you notice, what usually causes it, and what we do about it.
| What you notice | Likely cause | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| Will not fill with water | A tap that is not fully open, a blocked inlet filter, or a failed inlet valve. | We clean the inlet filters and test the valve and pressure switch. |
| Will not drain, or stops full of water | A blocked pump filter or hose, or a burnt-out drain pump. | We drain it safely, clear the blockage and replace the pump if needed. |
| Will not spin, or spins weakly | A worn drive belt or carbon brushes, an unbalanced load, or a motor fault. | Belt, brush and motor tests, with the worn part replaced. |
| Very loud when spinning | Worn drum bearings or broken shock absorbers. | Bearings and dampers replaced so the drum runs quietly again. |
| Door will not open or lock | A faulty door lock (interlock) or a broken handle. | New interlock or handle fitted and tested. |
| Leaking water | A torn door seal, a loose hose, or a cracked detergent drawer housing. | We find the leak point and replace the seal, hose or housing. |
| Water stays cold | A failed heating element or temperature sensor. | Element and sensor tests and replacement. |
| Twin-tub spinner not turning | A snapped belt, a faulty timer, or a worn spin motor. | Belt, timer and motor checks on Mika, Armco, Ramtons and other twin-tubs. |
Servicing
Washing machine maintenance
Most washing machine breakdowns start small: a clogged filter, a perished hose or a worn belt. A service catches them early.
- Clean the drain pump filter
- Clean the inlet hose filters
- Check hoses for bulges and cracks
- Clean the door seal and detergent drawer
- Check the belt, brushes and drum bearings
- Level the machine and check it is stable
How often: Every 6 months, or every 3 months if you wash daily or use borehole water.
Before you call: quick checks
Make sure the tap is fully open and the hose is not kinked.
Check the door is properly shut. Most machines will not start otherwise.
If it stopped full of water, switch it off at the wall before opening the pump filter.
Write down any code on the display. It tells us which part to bring.

Questions
Washing machine repair questions
What do the error codes mean?
Codes differ by brand. On Samsung, 4C or 4E usually means a water supply problem and 5C or 5E a drain problem. On LG, IE is water inlet and OE is drain. Send the code with your booking and we will tell you what it points to.
Do you repair twin-tub machines?
Yes. Twin-tubs from Mika, Armco, Ramtons and others are common in Kenya, and their belts, timers and motors are straightforward to repair.
My machine is still full of water. What should I do?
Switch it off at the wall and leave the door closed. We drain it safely before we start.
How long does a repair take?
Most repairs take one to two hours on site. Bearings and motors take longer, and some parts have to be ordered.
